The Wheaton City Council approved a 4-story, 20-unit apartment building at 300 S. Main Street for the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. The Planning and Zoning Board recommended it 5-1 in February; full council signed off in March. The project consolidates several lots at Main and Willow Avenue and will require a group care home license as part of the conditions.
Why it matters
That corner has been underutilized for years. A permanent supportive housing project specifically for veterans is the kind of development that matters well beyond the property line โ and it's happening right in the center of town.
